“We’ll meet here at your tent at sunset,” the chief said, hurrying down the ridge to the city of Hebron.

During the next few days, King Chedorlaomer’s army continued to travel north, beyond the cities of Dan and Damascus, camping finally at the city of Hobah. During the next few days, Abram’s “army”—made up of 318 men of his household, as well as Mamre, Eshcol, and Aner—marched northward. One night, they, too, had reached Hobah. Hiding in the hills, they saw the king’s army and all his prisoners.

“Look!” whispered Mamre to Abram. “The soldiers are laughing and playing games. They think their fighting days are over.”

“What is your plan now, Abram?” asked Eshcol, his eyes wide with excitement.

Abram looked at the huge army camped below and rubbed his beard. “We’ll divide into two groups and attack,” he said, pausing for a second. “After King Chedorlaomer has gone to sleep.”

As the king’s campfires died out, Abram gave the signal to go. The two groups of men went in different directions around the camp of the enemy army, walking softly not to waken any of the soldiers. Even the soldiers on guard duty were falling asleep, not aware of any danger nearby. At the second signal, the sound of a dove, Abram’s army attacked!

King Chedorlaomer’s army was no match for Abram’s band of men. They were too sleepy and they could not fight. Abram’s army won the battle easily, causing the last remaining soldiers to run for their lives.

Lot couldn’t believe his eyes. There was Abram, swinging his sword like a young man, his eyes wild with anger. “Uncle Abram, we’re over here!” Lot cried helplessly.

In a few giant strides, Abram reached his nephew, smothering him with a big bear hug. “Are you all right, Lot? And your family, are they well, too?”

Lot was so happy he could only nod his head.

Then Abram and his soldiers untied all the prisoners from Sodom and also took back all their possessions. In a few days, all the people of Sodom would be back home in their city. Lot wanted to thank Abram with something valuable, some silver and gold, or a herd of cattle. But Abram said no.
